Passing the torch – A Giving Tuesday Appeal for Alaa Hathaleen’s UK Tour

Donate now — and help bring Palestinian voices to the UK stage.

When 31-year-old peace activist Awdeh Hathaleen was killed by an Israeli settler in July 2025, his family and community in the West Bank were devastated. Awdeh was cherished in the Bedouin village of Umm al-Khair for his non-violent resistance to displacement and for helping create an Oscar-winning documentary exposing the settler violence driving the annexation of the West Bank. In the wake of his killing, his cousin Alaa Hathaleen vowed to continue the work Awdeh began.

This Giving Tuesday, we are raising £10,000 to fund Alaa’s seven-day UK advocacy tour — honouring Awdeh’s legacy by bringing Palestinian grassroots voices directly to the UK.

Why This Tour Matters Now

Alaa’s visit arrives at a crucial moment of heightened parliamentary and public awareness around Palestine. His tour will bring lived experience — not headlines or abstractions — to the forefront of UK political and public debate.

Through meetings with MPs, policymakers, journalists, students, and community audiences, Alaa will speak about daily life under military occupation, the threat of settler violence, and the ongoing displacement facing communities in Masafer Yatta and Umm al-Khair. His testimony puts names, faces, and real families at the heart of conversations that too often remain impersonal.

In late January/early February, Alaa will:

  • Brief Members of Parliament in Westminster

  • Speak at universities and public forums (in partnership with leading human rights organisations)

  • Screen his short documentary film about life in his village

  • Participate in Q&As and community events across multiple UK cities

With your help, these stories will reach the halls of Westminster, the media, and local communities — building understanding at a pivotal moment.

What Your Donation Will Fund

Our goal is £10,000, which will directly cover the essential costs of Alaa’s UK advocacy tour:

1. Travel & Accommodation

Flights from Palestine, ground transport across the UK, accommodation, and basic living expenses.

2. Events & Community Meetings

Venue hire, logistics and tech for parliamentary briefings, university talks, public screenings, and community gatherings. These events will engage MPs, students, journalists, and the wider public.

3. Media Outreach

Press coordination, interviews, and communications support to ensure Alaa’s message reaches national media and online audiences.

4. Documentary Filming & Production

A videographer will join the tour to create a short documentary so these powerful stories and exchanges reach far beyond the event rooms themselves.

Every pound you give helps bring Palestinian grassroots testimony to the UK at a time when it urgently needs to be heard.

If We Exceed Our Goal

Any additional funds raised will enable:

  • An expanded tour reaching more regions, or

  • Follow-up advocacy work and community projects inspired by this visit.

We are committed to full transparency and will update supporters on how funds are used and the impact of the tour.

Carry the Torch Forward

This Giving Tuesday, stand with us as we honour Awdeh’s memory and support Alaa in carrying the torch of non-violent resistance, storytelling, and hope for a just future.

In memory of Owda Hathaleen: a voice silenced, a legacy that won’t be

This special tribute honours Owda Hathaleen, a beloved teacher, journalist, and activist from Masafer Yatta, who was killed by an Israeli settler on 28 July 2025. A friend of the Britain Palestine Project, Owda dedicated his life to resisting displacement and defending his community. We reflect on his life, his legacy, and the urgent struggle for justice in the South Hebron Hills. MORE
